devouring the sacred land
in swirls of cooling molten lava;
the heat from Her turbulent passion subdued only by time and water
legends told of a yearning;
to be alongside Her true love
Madame Pele called to me as I neared Kilauea
reminding me that our ardor
creates new life
She is Pele, of Hawai’i; goddess of volcanoes and fire
